It was the decade of new music, new and exciting fashion and the introduction of new and improved cultural identity. Although this new decade was an exciting and fun time, the threats to our free country was a real possibility. The threat of Communism came into play, splitting the Labor party and bringing in the ANZUS treaty to combat that. In addition to that, Australia got involved in the Korean War in fear of Communism tearing our government apart. Girls donned short skirts and boys donned army greens, it was the decade of change in Australia and still affects our governmental decisions today. I Love Lucy became a national favourite show as well, the American comedienne charming many. For nights out on the town, the cinema, especially drive in cinemas, became popular; even though the calibre of film making was at a low. People loved the wide screens, the colour picture, and even the 3D effects at some showings. But not all was digitised, for some wholesome backyard fun, young kids became infatuated with hula hoops and comic books and going to the beach to tan. It was a much more fun era in the 50s than it is now. Kids nursed wounded knees instead of nursing their iPads in their laps.
